Blodgett Convection Oven Error Codes
Blodgett gas and electric convection ovens (DFG-100, DFG-200, Zephaire series, Mark V, Zephaire E) display error codes on units with digital controls. Older mechanical-thermostat units don't show codes but have similar underlying failure patterns.
E1 — Probe / Sensor Fault
Oven cavity temperature sensor open or shorted. Most common cause: mechanical damage to the probe (dropped pan hits the probe, or a pan handle catches the probe cable). Less common: probe wire corroded at the terminal block.
Fix: Inspect probe visually for physical damage. If probe looks OK, disconnect at terminal and measure resistance — open circuit = bad probe. Replace probe assembly. Stocked OEM part.
E2 — Temperature Out of Range
Oven read a temperature outside expected range for the current cook mode. Usually caused by: probe fault (see E1), heating element failure (electric units), or gas valve stuck open/closed (gas units).
Fix: Rule out E1 first (test probe). If probe is good, check heating element resistance (electric) or gas valve operation (gas). On gas units, check that both burners are firing — a single-burner failure on a dual-burner unit causes E2.
E3 — Heating Fault
Oven called for heat but didn't detect temperature rise within expected window.
Electric units: heating element burned out. Test each element with a multimeter; open = replace. Blodgett elements are model-specific; verify OEM part by model.
Gas units: igniter failed, flame sensor dirty, gas valve stuck closed. Check gas supply, then igniter, then flame sensor.
Both: high-limit thermostat tripped. Reset; if it re-trips, root cause matters (blocked airflow, failed thermostat, blocked vent).
Non-Code Common Failures
Convection fan not spinning: failed convection fan motor. Listen at the back of the oven — if motor is silent when door is closed and oven is on, motor is bad. Common part; stocked.
Door won't close: door gasket compressed or door hinge worn. Replace gasket first (cheap); if door still won't seal, hinges next.
Oven runs but food doesn't brown: convection fan spinning wrong direction (recent service tech miswired), or blower wheel loose on shaft.
Loud humming during startup: igniter buzzing — normal on some Blodgett gas models; not a failure.
Door light won't turn on: bulb burned out (typical), door switch failed (less common).
Blodgett DFG-100 vs DFG-200
The DFG-100 is a single-deck; DFG-200 is a double-stack. Individual components (heating elements, probes, motors) may be shared but access covers, gaskets, and door hardware differ. Verify by model + serial.
Preventive Maintenance
Clean convection fan blower wheel monthly — grease and flour dust build up and unbalance the wheel, causing bearing wear + uneven airflow (leading cause of uneven bake complaints). Blodgett service manual has the cleaning procedure.
